"Eleanor was a woman of deep faith, who like Mary Magdalene followed Jesus and Jesus’ Way. As a result she helped people in dire trouble, especially oppressed people. She took their side, despite risks, despite laws, despite threats, despite the option to just live in wealthy comfort. Eleanor did it all for Love. She felt that her faith required as much. She often quoted a version of the words from our invocation, James 2:26, “Faith without works is dead.” She put her faith to work. "

Judges 5 is believed to have been written shortly after the real battle back in the 12th century BC. One of the oldest, if not the oldest, story in the Bible remembers and records a woman playing a major heroic leadership role! And if that is not enough to get excited about, the story does not just lift up and honor a Hebrew female leader. Jael, an alien Kenite woman, a low life to the culture, is also held up as valued and heroic. Indeed it is into her hand that the enemy is delivered, to fulfill Deborah’s prophesy in the story. "
